I imported my whole journal from LJ a while back. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be indexed on Google -- like, if I search site:naomikritzer.dreamwidth.org "clown car" I get no hits. I checked my preferences and I did NOT check the "try to prevent search engines from indexing my journal" box or anything else that obviously looked like it would impede indexing. Anyone know what I should do to fix this? I definitely want people who go looking for my old political posts to find them (including me, since I pretty regularly look at old posts to find stuff I need to remember about candidates.)

No reason why it shouldn't be indexed (and I just double checked that your journal didn't have anything weird in the source), so it's probably just that Google hasn't crawled it. I looked up whether you could ask for them to recrawl a site, and you can, but first you have to set up webmaster tools and configure stuff. If you want to do that, you'd use the "add a particular Google analytics account to the tags of your site" verification method, then put your analytics account info in the appropriate box on the display tab of the manage settings page. (I'd link, but I'm on mobile and making links on mobile is annoying.)

If you just want to search stuff in your journal, though: if you have a paid account you (and all visitors to your journal, although they might need to be logged in, I don't remember if we allow logged out search) can use the DW native search, https://www.dreamwidth.org/search . it shows on your profile if you have a paid account -- check mine -- and lets you search just a single journal instead of site wide. Including in comments if you're a paid account! And it indexes real time so it's waaaaay faster than waiting for Google to crawl.

(I may be wrong about needing a paid account for individual journal search. I'd have to double check, and again, mobile. And lazy.)

It might be related to this bug. I don't think I really understand what that bug describes, but it looks like maybe asking DW support to reindex your journal, and maybe pointing them toward that bug report, might do the trick.

Different thing! That issue you found is for the on site search (and it's been fixed now anyway). Naomi is talking about Google returning results from her journal.
Edited (Swype, how the fuck did you get "start" from "anyway" the patterns are totally different) Date: 2017-04-10 12:44 am (UTC)
