Another problem with "make a quilt!" is that my children wore mostly knits. Neither knits nor denim lend themselves to quilting. I don't think I could have gotten a lap quilt out of the unused clothes that were actually lightweight woven cotton.

The de-stufferizer that worked best for me was putting stuff in the attic in a garbage bag. If nobody missed it in N months, off to Goodwill it went.
