As a Valentine's Day gift, my mother gave Kiera a dancing gorilla that sings "Love Machine." Or rather, it sings the last couple of lines: "I'm just a loooooove machine! I don't work for nobody but you. I'm just a love machine! A hug and kissing fiend! La... la la la la....la la la la...la la....pushitpushitbaybeh yeah! I'm just a love machine..." It cycles twice and then, mercifully, shuts up until someone presses the little button on its hand again.

Kiera loved it. She called it her La La and would ask us to turn it on. Over. And over. And over.

Today, the batteries died. They'd been fading for a couple of days (since Monday, actually -- Mom gave it to her on Friday, so it has done its little dance many MANY times) but today they truly bit the dust, complete with the song fading out and dying mid-sentence. Kiera looked at her dead no-longer-singing gorilla and burst into heartbroken sobs. So naturally, we replaced the batteries. For a few hours, it was back to its old self -- then it stopped working completely. I think the switch may have broken. It might spontaneously come to life again tomorrow, but I'm not optimistic. We've now gone through two electronic yap-yap doggies, both of which worked until the first set of batteries died. We replaced the batteries, but the dogs stayed dead.

Anyway, I have to say, Love Machine has got to be the most irritating earworm ever. I've had it running through my head almost nonstop since last Friday. And I don't understand why these gadgets die when their batteries do. (And it's not that I'm putting the batteries in wrong -- I'm not that technologically incompetent! The most recent yap-yap doggie, with fresh batteries, you can hear that some motor inside of him is running when you turn him on, but he doesn't yap or walk. It's like some connection came loose.)

Kiera still likes to wear her coat-coat even when she's not going anywhere, but has stopped insisting on wearing it to bed or during meals. She does, however, want to wear her striped fuzzy socks every day, and also her blue velcro sneakers with the little flowers embroidered on the denim. This is mostly fine. Whenever I run a load of laundry during the week, I try to sneak the socks in so that they don't get to stinky.

However, she has not given up on the idea of wearing her sneakers to bed. She is allowed to wear her Robeez to bed if she wants but NOT the sneakers with rubber soles, because she comes into bed with me during the night and she kicks. If she would stay in her own bed all night I'd let her wear whatever footwear she wanted, but in my bed, she has to play by my rules.

You would think that since we have been absolutely consistent on this rule, she would understand it by now, but she still throws a fit every time the blue shoes go night-night.

New Kiera words: "no-nez," which means "noses." Ed taught her to rub noses and sometimes she'll initiate it.

I swear I heard her say "snuggle" today.
