I think it's really easy to fall into the 'person likes x so it will be a GREAT gift' mindset without considering the person's tastes, or other ramifications of the gift. I was thinking about this yesterday when I was at No Coast Craft-a-Rama. There was someone selling beautiful (to me) artistic renditions of various lakes, including Burntside. I was briefly tempted to get it for you and Ed, but a) I wasn't sure enough of your tastes to know if you'd like it, and b) it was not framed. Giving someone an un framed piece of art struck me as a good candidate as a gift for someone you hate. It can be meant sincerely, and in a few cases even is probably appreciated, but it can also be 'here, let me impose my tastes on you, AND make you pay through the nose if you ever want to enjoy it'. Bonus points for buying something in a size and/or shape that they will never find a cheap Target/IKEA frame for.
