On our road trip to Ohio, one of the CDs we brought along to listen to was the Beatles collection that's all their songs that were #1 on either the British or American charts. This was Molly's favorite thing to listen to on the trip -- any time we let her choose what to listen to, she picked the Beatles. I spent some time thinking about how someone ought to put together a Beatles collection that would be geared towards children. Lots of Beatles songs make really fantastic children's songs. "Yellow Submarine," for example. "Octopus's Garden." "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds." "Eight Days a Week," which I regularly sing to Molly and Kiera. "When I'm Sixty-Four." "Here Comes the Sun."
Of course, there are songs you'd probably pass on. "Yesterday," because it's depressing. "The Long and Winding Road," because it's not going to appeal to a kid. "Why Don't We Do It in the Road?"
Anyway, I started wondering which song was Molly's favorite, so yesterday I asked her. It had been a while since we listened to the CD so I wasn't sure if she'd be able to tell me (when you ask her a question she doesn't know the answer to, she'll dodge by saying, "well, what do you think?" or "what's your favorite?") But she didn't so much as hesitate. "The one that says, 'all the lonely people, where do they all come from,'" she said.
Shows what I know.
