This is totally awesome
Jun. 13th, 2006 09:16 pmThere's a blogger named Pamie who a few years ago started sponsoring book drives for needy libraries. She got in touch with the libraries and had them set up wish lists on Amazon.com; people could then buy items off the wish lists and have them sent directly to the libraries.
The recipient libraries this year are in and around Biloxi and Gulfport, Mississippi. One of the libraries was completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, and is now operating out of a trailer; others were flooded and lost entire segments of their collection. Some of the libraries in Harrison County were left intact by the storm, but lost most of their budget and can't afford to buy new books right now.
If you'd like to help rebuild this library system, you can order books off the wish lists. You can also make straight-up financial donations to the libraries (the site tells you how) and I believe you can also order the books of your choice off of Amazon and have them sent to the library that determines where donations should go.
Browse the wish lists. Donate something, if you can. Spread the word.
Dewey Donation System
(I donated two books -- one called "The Scavenger's Guide to Haute Cuisine," because I looked at the description and thought, "Ooooh, I wanna read that!" and the other called "Lake of Skulls," the YA that was right next to it on the list, because, well, it made the order $25 and I could get the free shipping from Amazon.)
