I will not be at WorldCon. I've only been to to WorldCon once, in 1998. Every other year there's been something keeping me away.
1999: Held in Australia. Too expensive to get there.
2000: Held in Chicago. Practically next door. Cheap and easy to get to and all my friends were going. I was pregnant and due in mid-September. Jim Frenkel, my agent at the time, noted that he had been a Lamaze coach and could help me out in a pinch. I stayed home anyway.
2001: Held in Philly. Was still nursing my not-quite-1-year-old, couldn't travel without her, didn't want to drag Ed to Philly.
2002: Held in San Jose. Was still nursing my not-quite-2-year-old, couldn't travel without her, didn't want drag Ed to San Jose.
(I'll note that Ed would've been willing if I'd really wanted to do it. But Molly wanted to nurse to sleep every night, and woke up multiple times; I wouldn't have been able to go to late-night parties. Why would I go to WorldCon if I was just going to have to skip the fun parties?)
2003: Held in Toronto. Was pregnant and due in September AGAIN.
2004: Held in Boston. Considered going, but see above about parties and non-sleeping one-year-olds.
2005: Held in Glasgow. Traveling with kids is enough of a pain in the butt without dragging them all the way to Scotland.
Kiera is still nursing, but is pretty emphatically in the process of weaning, and no longer needs me to get to sleep at night. If I'd signed up for WorldCon this year, I could have gone, and she'd have been fine. I am so thoroughly not in the habit of making it to WorldCon, though, that it didn't even occur to me.
Next year, it's going to be held in Japan.
::sigh::
