Molly turned four today.

We baked cupcakes for her to take into preschool. I made a buttercream frosting with the Earth Balance spread, which worked really well, actually. Her birthday dinner was the exact same shrimp-and-peas dish that Kiera had -- at Molly's request ("I want exactly what Kiera had. That was really good.") Ed also made home-made egg rolls tonight.

Molly opened presents after dinner. I asked her a few months ago what she wanted for her birthday, and she said that she wanted a red-haired doll like Sophie. Sophie is a "My Generation" doll from Target -- a 16" doll, kind of a knock-off of the American Girls modern-day girl collection (but much, much cheaper). When I went to Target to look for one, I discovered that the red-haired doll was no longer available. I wound up getting one via Ebay.

Molly is still young enough that she doesn't tear through all her presents and then look around to see if there's anything else: no, when she opens a gift, she wants to play with it. I hate having to tell her to put down her new toy and go open the rest of her gifts, so when I wrapped stuff last night I deliberately put some items together as a single package, like the doll tent and two doll sleeping bags that I got for Sophie and the redhead.

Molly was really excited to get the red-haired doll. She promptly named her Earl. She had a friend in preschool last year who had a red-haired Target doll named Earl, which is why Molly wanted one in the first place. Sophie and Earl are cousins. They went camping together in the tent. The doll tent, incidentally, is almost as much of a pain in the butt to set up as a real tent.

As a final present, Ed took down an envelope and coached Molly through reading what was inside. It was the gift of "a healthy mom" -- he had bought ME a health club membership. And made an appointment for all of us on Thursday. The health club has a day care (a very nice one) and last winter Molly loved going. So it's not quite as lame a birthday present for Molly as one might think.

I have never in my life set foot in a health club. In fact, I have never used a stair-stepper or any of the standard pieces of health club fitness equipment -- I've lifted weights with a machine (in health class in high school) and I have ridden a stationary bicycle once or twice, but that is it. In addition, I know nothing about health club etiquette. So this should be interesting.

Cake and ice cream (Mocha Mix non-dairy dessert, actually) went well. During stories, unfortunately, Kiera head-butted Molly and gave her a bloody nose. Molly was horribly upset. Her nose hurt, first of all. Ed observed that she also seemed to feel betrayed: she'd let Kiera climb onto her bed, she'd been nice to Kiera, and Kiera responded by hurting her (accidentally, but still). Poor kiddo. I think the rest of her birthday was satisfactory, though.

Next up: Molly's party. I am almost as clueless about preschooler parties as I am about health club etiquette. Heh.
