At dinner tonight, Ed spilled his drink, and Molly informed him that it wasn't her fault. Ed found this annoying, and after mopping up the drink, said, "The last thing I need when I've just spilled something all over the table is someone saying 'it wasn't MY fault' in a snotty voice."

"No," Molly said. "The LAST thing you need would be nine trillion and NINETY people ALL saying 'it wasn't my fault' in a snotty voice!"

I bought a copy of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at a garage sale sometime over the summer. Molly ignored it. (It was fantasy, and it was a book I had liked as a kid. Two strikes against it.) Well, she picked it up yesterday or the day before and finished it tonight. She loved it, and handed it over to me, suggesting that I read it (or re-read it) too. (She does this frequently with books she particularly likes.)

So far as I know, she does not yet know that there's a movie version. I think she might be old enough for the movie version, but Kiera definitely isn't. (The Flying Monkeys are scary.) I did mention to her that the author wrote a whole series of books about Oz, though, and that I could help her find the next one at the library tomorrow.

Art class started today. I picked Molly up at school; I also picked up a friend of hers who is in the same art class who will be carpooling with us. I stood around a bit in the hallway, listening to the middle school band playing In the Hall of the Mountain King. They sounded startlingly good for a middle school ensemble playing in early October. (Which is to say, they sounded terrible, but it was recognizable, they were playing together on the beat, they were clearly paying good attention to the director, and I could believe that by the time the concert rolls around they'll really sound good.)

I had the great good fortune of having a third-grade teacher who read a chapter from the Oz books every single day after lunch. It was a great way to phase the kids back into classroom mode after our hour of freedom outside playing. We were rapt and there were never any dicipline issues during that period.

I loved the Oz books so much that my mom started giving me them for birthdays and holidays. I read them all cover to cover, even after hearing them read outloud. Most of them I read several times. I'm so glad to hear Molly will be enjoying them too.
