I got a rejection from Strange Horizons for my SFnal Chelm story. (Chelm is the subject of a number of classic Jewish folktales -- it was a town in Poland that was allegedly inhabited entirely by really stupid people who thought they were geniuses.) I haven't decided where to send it next. I have a sad suspicion that it may not be funny enough to actually sell anywhere, though I'll keep trying.
I've been working on editing Freedom's Apprentice. It's coming along. I need to bug one of my geo major friends with more geology questions.
New Kiera tricks: she has discovered that she can climb up onto Molly's little table, stand on it, and then dive over the back of the loveseat onto the seat of the loveseat, head first. This is really fun, apparently, because she will do it over and over and over.
It took Molly a long time to catch on to the fact that she could drag her chairs around for use as makeshift step stools, if something was out of her reach. I have the bad, bad feeling that Kiera is already figuring this out.
I have a friend who has a book called The Right Dog for You that notes that some dogs are good problem solvers, and that this is not necessarily what you want. "Remember, to a dog, a closed door is a problem." I do what my children to be good problem solvers, I'd just prefer that they acquire at least a little bit of common sense and an instinct for self-preservation before they start figuring out how to solve problems like, "I cannot climb onto the top of the refrigerator," and "that interesting looking object is out of my reach."
