1. Kiera counts convertibles. She became fascinated by convertibles last summer (unless it was the summer before? I'm not sure) and started pointing them out. At first, she would just comment on them, and frankly I was amazed by just how many convertibles you'll see driving around in Minnesota. She explained in late summer that she was collecting them, and by pointing them out, she was adding the convertible to her collection.

This year she started counting them. If she's been out of the house at all, you can ask her how many convertibles she's spotted today, and she will tell you. Her daily goal is ten, but whether she makes her goal is heavily dependent on how much time she spends in the car.

2. Molly, not to be outdone, watches license plates. Minnesota plates have three letters, a space, and then three numbers (or vice versa). She is specifically searching for license plates where the three digits are between 1 and 5, with no repetitions. So, GEM 324 qualifies; GEM 322 doesn't, nor does GEM 021 or GEM 382. She also tries to spot ten daily.

I grew up in Dallas, Texas. Sometime during the 1970s, Texas added an image of the state between the letters and the numbers on the plate. They didn't start a new run of letters and numbers; they just added the raised imprint of the state's shape.

My father, who had a 1 hour commute each way to his office, tried to identify when they made the transition. He eventually narrowed the gap to one run of letters (e.g, the change occurred between GEM 000 and GEM 999). When we moved from Texas, he contacted the state to find out the precise transition, and no one admitted to knowing they'd ever made the change, much less when!

Those are pretty intricate details on the license plates. It sounds like it might be time for Aunt Abi to teach Molly to ID birds!
