I got an envelope from Bantam today; inside were two copies of Freedom's Apprentice, hot off the press.

I decided to send one copy to my grandmother, along with some pictures of the girls, a letter, and a picture drawn by Molly. I have it all packaged up (I came up to figure out postage with the USPS website) and just realized that I forgot to sign the book. Well, at least I hadn't put stamps on it yet...

In other news, I baked banana bread with the girls. I'm not sure why I find baking so therapeudic. Maybe it's the sugary goodness I get to eat afterwards. Anyway, I'm in a much better mood, despite the fact that Kiera (who loves baking projects) managed to scatter flour across the table, two chairs, and most of the dining room floor.

The good things I get out of baking are the opposite of the good things I get out of writing. It's largely physical instead of largely mental, short-term rewards instead of long-term rewards, immediately communal instead of mostly isolated...lots of good stuff that's exactly what I need for balance.

I am consumed with fretfullness.

April 26 is rather too long to wait!

(I feel like Kiera, wanting the book RIGHT NOW.)

I just discovered that you were published. I lost track of too much over the last ten years. Never too late to pick up loose ends. I believe I will be tracking down the books this weekend and devouring them, as I'm tired of reading computer networking stuff. Read the first 8 pages of your first book on Amazon (the tease), and am now eager to finish it. Congratulations, Naomi.

As for baking - I love it. It makes your whole house smell yummy, and when children are involved, you often get the reward of being informed that you're the best baker ever. Oddly enough, I don't eat the breads of my labor very often - I love to bake, not so eager to eat afterwards - at least not the sweet stuff. Breadsticks baked on the grill (wood fuel - as close as we get to a brick oven at my house - put 'em on a baking stone) are calling my name for tomorrow, I think.
