We spent a week in Ohio at the end of July for my grandmother's 80th birthday, staying at Lake Hope State Park. Lake Hope rents these lovely little cabins that look very rustic yet have central air conditioning if it gets hot and humid. (They're also equipped with fire rings, grills, picnic tables, and screened porches.) My parents were there for the week as well; my sister came out for part of the time, as did my brother and my new sister-in-law (Nate got married in May). My mother's cousin Gary, and his wife Debbie, came up from Texas.

My Grammie had a lovely time. So did we. It's a beautiful park, with a nice little beach, boat rentals, and hiking trails -- almost everything Ed and I want in a vacation destination. (Well, Ed would also want mountains.)

Some notable moments from the week:

1. Kiera took her first steps. She also said what sounded like her first word -- "Ock ock ock ock ock," which apparently meant "walk walk walk walk walk."

2. Molly completed a 1 1/2-mile long hike over fairly rough terrain, which is pretty impressive for a not-yet-four-year-old.

3. Gary mentioned that he has a box of family memorabilia from Maine that includes letters from the 1600s. It's currently in his attic in Texas. I tried to convince him to send it to me. At least some of it.
