I slept much better last night. In fact, I went to sleep within five minutes of the light going off, and slept for nine hours. I got up at some point to pee, and I think that's when Ed brought Kiera into bed, but we all went right back to sleep after that.

Alas, thanks in large part to the sleep deprivation, I came down with a cold, so I still feel lousy. I have a sore throat and a headache. I just made myself a cup of hot lemonade. Hot lemonade was one of the things my mother would make me for colds and flu when I was a kid. I find it very soothing, and prefer it to herbal teas that most people drink while sick. As I was making it, it occurred to me that most people would probably be completely grossed out by the very idea of hot lemonade, and would probably really hate it if they ever tried it. There are some cures that work solely because your mother used them on you, I think.

Does anyone else drink hot lemonade? Or have some similar miracle elixir that horrifies your friends?

I don't drink hot lemonade, but I know plenty of people who do. My cousins drink hot Jello, which is just too disgusting for words.

The cousins in question are in their 40s, and as my great-uncle (their dad) was explaining this habit to me, he said, "When [older daughter] lived here, she'd snip a corner off the package of peach Jello and make herself a cup of it at a time and close the package back up and put it back in the cupboard." Then he got a funny look on his face and got up to check. Sure enough, his 46-year-old daughter was sneaking cups of hot peach Jello one at a time when she was at their house.

I have not tried it myself, but a couple of friends have tried a concoction of lemons and garlic, hot, as a remedy for chest cold. Both say there was improvement, but to varying degrees.

Apparently my mother was not a sufficient earth-witch, as the weirdest thing she ever made me drink when I was sick was Sprite/7up.

I had hot lemonade when I was a kid. It was supposed to be good for getting a fever to break. Sometimes, a dash of whiskey would be added. I tried to avoid that; I hate whiskey, I have always hated it. On the other hand, if I had known about Lemoncello as a kid I would have started drinking sooner. The last time I had a bad cold, lemon tea with Lemoncello in it helped a lot.

Evidently the actor who did the voice of Gollum subsided on hot lemonade with honey and ginger to keep his throat from getting totally thrashed during filming. Rogers makes it for me when I'm sick, and drinks it himself when he's sick.

I hope you feel better soon!

I was thinking about your insomnia because I've been having trouble going to sleep lately and then this morning when I woke up my throat was raw so I squeezed some lemons, boiled some hot water and added gobs of honey. If the lemonade weren't hot, how would the honey melt?

When I feel supa-crappy, I boil ginger root, then add the lemons and honey, but I don't like a strong ginger taste so much so if I feel like I can get away with just lemon and honey I will.

My mom used to make us cough medicine by putting an organic lemon cut in 1/2 face down in a saucer of local honey with a tsp of cloves. Consequently I cannot stand cloves, but even I have to admit that cloves numbes your throat. honey coats it and lemon fights infection. Ginger also fights infection, but if I have a sore throat to start out with, it usually burns as it goes down.

I think I'll go make another cup of hot lemonade right now. I also suck on frzn. rasberries when I'm sick because the cold also is numbing. Does that make me weird?

Yes, I do like hot lemonade, but I don't reserve it only for times that I am sick.

I like hot lemonade. I started drinking it in college. I drink it primarily when I'm sick but I like it other times too.

We got hot vanilla milk when we were kids. Vanilla and some nutmeg grated into a cup of heated milk.
