Swimming Lessons wrap-up
Jul. 4th, 2005 01:18 amSession One of swimming lessons finished on Thursday. The toddlers from the parent-child class had the opportunity to jump off the diving board: one of the teachers waited below the board with a floatie, and caught the kid as they went into the water to help them get to the side of the pool. Parents were encouraged to jump in after them, but as I am completely helpless without my glasses, I wasn't about to do that.
Anyway, I walked Kiera to the end of the board. As I was telling the teacher that I really didn't think Kiera was going to do it, she jumped in.
She went under briefly, of course, and came up sputtering and screaming her head off. She wouldn't go back in the water the rest of the day, but I think that was probably because once she got out, she got cold, and wanted to be wrapped up in a towel and nurse.
Molly did not pass Level Two, which is not at all surprising. I think this is the equivalent of Red Cross Beginners, and I remember it took me quite a few tries to pass each level when I was a kid. She got an evaluation sheet which listed each skill the kids needed to learn, and checked off whether she'd learned that skill. Molly was fascinated by the sheet, and asked me to read it to her; when Ed got home that evening, she wanted him to read it to her, as well. It occurred to me later that this was the first time that she'd ever had her capabilities formally evaluated. She was a bit irate that the teacher had not checked her off for "retrieves items from bottom of pool," as she'd done it (for the first time) that day, but otherwise seemed to consider the judgments fair. I'm impressed by the things she's learned in two weeks.
